HELLO, I’M
DR. JAMES
HEWITT

For more than twenty years, I’ve been exploring what drives human performance. My work today focuses on transforming workplaces, but this journey began in elite sports.

As a full-time racing cyclist in the early 2000s, I became fascinated by the science of pushing limits. After several years of high-level competition, I returned to university to complete a Sports Science degree and started a coaching business. At the time, cycling was becoming “the new golf,” and I found myself working with knowledge workers—professionals who spent 80-hour weeks in the office and tackled 180-kilometer races on the weekend.

Initially, my focus was on their physical training, but it quickly became clear that their demanding work lives were the real limiting factor. I began investigating the unique challenges of knowledge work and soon observed a troubling pattern: overload, insufficient recovery, and diminishing returns.

THIS PROMPTED A GAME-CHANGING REALIZATION:

We need to approach knowledge work as a
Cognitive Endurance activity.

BUT I’VE ENCOUNTERED A COMMON MISCONCEPTION.

Whether in sports or in business, too many people believe that peak performance comes at the expense of health and wellbeing. I’ve always been convinced that the opposite is true: health, wellbeing, and peak performance can—and should—reinforce each other.

To test this theory, I returned to university and earned a PhD in Performance Science, gathering and analyzing data from some of the world’s highest-performing organizations. My research confirmed what I’d observed in practice: from Formula One teams to Fortune 500 companies, thriving individuals drive sustainable success.

I went on to synthesize these findings in the concept of

Regenerative Performance:

A SELF-PERPETUATING CYCLE OF HUMAN THRIVING AND SUSTAINABLE HIGH PERFORMANCE THAT DRIVES LONG-TERM BUSINESS SUCCESS.

If your organization is looking for a practical, science-backed approach to creating a workplace where your people don’t just survive but thrive and where they can reach their full potential with a measurable commercial impact, I would love to hear from you.
